Positives:

“Steel Bridge” is a beautifully building composition in interesting textures and layers.

Bottom Line:

“Steel Bridge” was inspired by the urban rhythms of old industry. The steady rhythmic layered motifs create a moody, atmospheric and uplifting tribute to the men and women involved in building the mighty Tyne Bridge in the 1920's in Luck’s hometown of Newcastle upon Tyne UK. Luck explains, “The bridge has been an important landmark throughout my life. From visits as a small child more than forty years ago to the bustling quayside Sunday market, through to taking part in the Great North Run half marathon last year and running over the bridge just as the Red Arrows flew in formation overhead. The imposing, impressive single span towers over the river, linking Newcastle and Gateshead and every time I have been away, the sight of the green parabolic arch makes me feel proud to be a Geordie.” Starting with a rhythmic arpeggiated figure on the piano, the strings enter with legato and staccato lines that build the atmosphere. Another motif enters as the counterpoint develops around the elongated sustained melody. The harmony’s tension and release add to the drama. The electric and acoustic sounds blend well, and the tune is well produced. The climax at the end is fitting and satisfying. Luck has a style that will appeal to the contemporary modern classical listener. The music has elements of the great classical tradition with contemporary rhythms, harmonic flow and sounds. Well worth the listen. That’s the short of it!
