DeLange is an Amsterdam based neo-romantic composer and pianist that writes original music with a strong influence from the romantic and early modern era. DeLange writes primarily for solo piano and has a deep connection and believes in the creative process as both a performer and composer. DeLange explains, “I strongly feel composers and performers conduct time and space. They stretch or compress one’s experience of a moment and choose to put the listener in a tight room or in outer space. Furthermore, composers are able to capture the raw emotions of life and convert them into audible images for reminiscing.” DeLange completed his classical training at the conservatory and started working as a pianist writing for and accompanying other artists. However, soon he felt the inner urge to capture his emotions of life with his own repertoire. Now at 46 years of age, the long evolution as a pianist, composer and as a human being is captured in his writing, producing and recording of his first album. “Tristesse” is a neo romantic composition and the first single from his up-coming release.
Positives:
“Tristesse” has a beautiful melody and a song form and melodic development that is based in the romantic classical tradition.
Bottom Line:
DeLange creates an original that is very melodic, with a form that has varying feels and harmonic and melodic developments. His performance of the composition is light and lyrical, which further heightens the composition’s appeal. The neo-romantic description is spot on. According to DeLange the emotions are to portray the energy of love, loss and hope, which fits the color and aura of the music. The harmony is clear and the melodic line that weaves through it is emotive and builds a musical story. That’s the short of it!
