From the loins of Lincoln, Nebraska Josh Hoyer masterminded Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal in 2012. Its blues drenched beginnings were heavily influenced by their towns legendary sound. Many awards later this five-piece band includes some of the area’s most revered and accomplished musicians. Joining Hoyer (keyboards, vocals) is Blake DeForest (trumpet), Mike Keeling (bass), Benjamin Kushner (guitar), and Larell Ware (drums). Inspired by the sounds of Stax, Motown, Muscle Shoals, New Orleans, Philly and San Francisco, the band’s mantra is to bring pure joy to its audience so much so they can’t help but dance their cares away. On January 18th, 2019, Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal released Do It Now, their fourth full-length studio album. The album was recorded at Silver Street in Ashland, NE and at Make Believe Studios in Omaha, NE.
Positives:
Filled with soulful nostalgia and dressed up for a modern era, but still in keeping with the best of what the soul genre has to offer, plenty of soul!
Bottom Line:
Hoyer has a big warm voice filled with the fire that makes soul music so timeless. The absonant energy and moving authenticity drips like honey. Heartened by soaring horns and a fiery rhythm section, the band is locked and filled with chemistry. It’s a working group that has a polished sound that reaches the listener on many levels. Their musicianship is evident from the first notes and it’s a welcomed sound worth repeated listening. If you are a fan of James Brown, Otis Redding or Sam Cooke, this album is for you, pick up your copy and Do It Now. That's the short of it!
