Rock Candy Funk Party (RCFP) was formed for one thing and one thing only, the love of groove. RCFP might improvise like a jam band, but their compositions, song forms and adept skills of listening to each other put them in a category all of their own. Each player brings their own unique individuality and understanding of various styles of music, every style from rock and R&B to Jazz and Funk, the mixed sound is pure groove though, no matter the style. RCFP is formed by: Tal Bergman (producer and drummer), Joe Bonamassa (guitar), Ron DeJesus (guitar), Mike Merritt (bass) and Renato Neto (keyboards). RCFP’s The Groove Cubed has driving funky beats, and jaw-dropping guitar, as the band effortlessly combines blues, rock, jazz and funk that will get your money maker shakin’. So that’s the short of it.
Positives: Each track is full of groovin’ excitement and in the pocket playing. The band has a classic sound of the classic ’70s /’80s jazz-funk bands that has been turned up to 20, no, wait, the groove has been cubed and so has everything else!
Bottom Line: Each track is an adventure in melody, form, style and playing. These guys know how to groove, whether doing a cover of the classic James Brown tune “I Got the Feelin’” or playing a swing tune that combines, country, jazz, blues and gypsy jazz into a swirling swing groove as in “Ping Pong,” this group lays down a groove. Oh, did I mention they groove, yes, they GROOVE!
